Thanks for checking out WT Social (pronounced “double-you tee social” – yes, we know it’s clunky). Whether you found us via our founder (Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia fame), from an article or just a friend trying to escape the clutches of Big Social, you’re very welcome here.
WT Social is called that because it started out as a news site called WikiTribune. Over time, we realised that the internet’s problems with clickbait and fake news don’t come from journalism – they come from the business models of the social networks disseminating articles to the public.
So we switched our focus to making a social network without the pitfalls of the big guys. That means no ads, no paywalls, no sponsored content – just like Wikipedia. This approach probably isn’t the best for making us rich, but it keeps us neutral and focused on what our members want, not what big corporations want to see. An added bonus is that it means your data isn’t packaged up and sold to advertisers.
We’ve also repurposed the Wikipedia model of community editing, meaning if you see something dodgy or misleading on WT Social, you can go in and correct it yourself. Yes, even on Jimmy’s posts.
We’re a small team, funded entirely by donations from the public (we’ll say it again – like Wikipedia!). We’re focusing on getting the site’s functionality perfect first, and proving our concept. That means it’s not the most beautiful social network you’ve ever seen and doesn’t have a mobile app yet, but don’t forget that the glossy veneer of the big guys hides a multitude of sins including hate speech and violence.
We don’t know about you, but we’d rather hang out in a janky place with great people than a beautiful room full of liars.
Led by Jimmy ‘Jimbo’ Wales, founder of Wikipedia, our team also includes:
