Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Thursday 31/10/2019 17:45:03 / Latest Version

WT:Social aims to create a social network centered around news. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:

Portugues (FAQ)

German / Deutsch (FAQ)

Spanish / Español (FAQ)

Do I have to pay to continue using this site?

No! Subscriptions are entirely voluntary. We want you to enjoy yourself and help us with this new and exciting challenge.

Will there be versions in different languages?

We hope so! As you may know, we are a small team right now and therefore our budget is tight. Thanks to the generous people who are donating and already have donated, we are already much closer to this goal.

Can I get help in my language?

Not sure yet. There is a "Help" SubWiki. Asking for other languages now....

If you have questions not regarding the website (payment, privacy, etc.) please send an Email to info {@} wikitribune.com

I need to change my account details!

If you have made a mistake with your email address or username, please email info{@}wikitribune.com and Fiona will change that for you ASAP. There’s high demand at the moment, and soon you will be able to do this yourself. We’re really sorry for the disruption!

Where can I report bugs?

There is a Bug Report SubWiki. Please read the "Known Bugs" posting first, though.

Where can I request new functionality / features?

There is a wiki called WT:Improvements. I think that's where feature requests should go.

How do I invite friends?

Please see  "How to use circle invitations" by Fiona and this post.

How do I manage the list of my friends?

Right now you can only go to your profile (https://wt.social/u/YourName) or click the link with your name at the top of the page. On the right side at the bottom you'll find your friends. When you click a person and land on their profile you can end a friendship (buttons „Unfriend“ and „Unfollow“).

What are those SubWikis?

Theses are principally just streams for certain topics. You can easily create own ones. But they don't "belong" to you anymore. Whoever wants to, can create new posts or join the SubWiki.

I want to post a link. How can I find a suitable SubWiki?

I want to create a new SubWiki, what should I consider?

  • First, check if there already is a SubWiki covering the topic. See the section "I want to post a link." for instruction on how to search.
  • Think about under which search term your subwiki should be found. Choose the name of the subwiki accordingly.
  • Give a short description, what the subwiki is about. Use the terms you though about.
  • Tip: Write a short orientation post like this one. Pin it to the feed so that it's always listed at the top.

How do subwiki hashtags work?

"Subwiki hashtags" are normal hashtags, the term denotes only a special application of a hashtag.
Take this example: you post an Article about genetically modified Avocados in the subwiki "Genetic Engineering". But the posting also concerns climate change: the genetic modification makes the Avocados resistant to a changing climate. If you use the hashtag #climatechange, you can find the article from the orientation post in the "Climate Change" subwiki.

Can I run an institutional SubWiki?

For several reasons: no. WT:Social is about fact-based news and takes a neutral point of view. By its nature, an institutional SubWiki cannot fulfill the latter. This is true for the entire field of PR, so that for example, announcements and press releases have no place in WT:Social, too.
SubWikis do not "belong" to their initiator, but to the community. This would contradict the character of an institutional SubWiki.

Can I run a SubWiki for a specific profession?

Yes and no. You can adress a specific target group, but you must not exclude other community members who are interested in the topic. SubWikis are for everyone! Please formulate the SubWiki description carefully!

How do I change the description of a SubWiki?

Currently that's only possible for admins. Please get in touch with Fiona or Ingrid. Jimmy has asked for people who are interested in taking over the responsibilities of an admin.

Who will see my posts? Where are they listed?

  • Everything you post (articles and comments) will appear on your own "profile" feed.
  • All articles you post will also appear on your own "main" feed (the homepage).
  • Posting to a subwiki: listed on the subwiki feed and on the "main" feed of all followers of that subwiki as well as your own followers.
  • Posting via "Main Menu" => "Add New Article": listed on the "main" feed of all your followers.
  • Posting to somebody else's "Talk" page: listed on that users "main" feed.
  • Posting to your own "Talk" page: listed only on your own "Talk" page.
  • Postings which are made global: listed on everybody's "main" feed. Default is "local".

What are "individual" and "collaborative" Posts?

individual Posts can only be edited by the creator, collaborative Posts can be edited by everyone.

This site is based in the idea, that everyone can edit posts, that's why "collaborative" is the default setting. But if you want to protect posts (e.g.. an "About Me" entry in your profile) you can mark that as "individual". Whether or not the "individual" option is purposeful is on the trial. If being abused, it will be killed (comment by Jimmy, 22/11/2019).

How do I delete the photos on my profile page?

Right now that's not possible. It's only possible to change them to something else.

How can I report abuse? (spam, harassment, hate speech, etc.)

Please tell either Fiona, Saiba or Ingrid. If you need staff attention, Fiona is the best person to talk to. You can also email Fiona directly at fiona.apps{@}wikitribune.com if you’d like to make a complaint anonymously.

Why are there things on "My Feed" I don't want to see?

Possible Answer 1: WT:Social currently has a function named ‘make global’ which pushes certain news stories on to everyone’s feed. This is designed to highlight excellent original posts by users, give small subwikis more love, and show you news you may not have come across on other sites. Any and all feedback about how you feel with regards to this is extremely welcome!

Possible Answer 2: Someone you are following may be making posts about subjects you’re not interested in. Please check who you are following on your profile page. (This is https://wt.social/u/your-name)

Possible Answer 3: Every user is added to a couple of SubWikis by default. You'll see those on your profile under "Member of".

How do I get rid of those?

In your profile you have the "Member of" box. There you have the list of "SubWikis" you're subscribed to. Now you have to open every one and unsubscribe. You have a box with the name of the SubWiki, some stats and a "Leave" button. That can be found either at the top right (big window) or near the bottom (small window / screen).

I'm receiving at lot of email!

On the main menu (top-right "Burger" icon) you have a point "My account", click that. Now, on the left side you have a box "Account options" with a point "Edit notifications", click that. There you can change email notification for different events.

Will there be Apps for Android / IOS?

Can you send private messages?

There is no possibility to send private messages to other users. You can post to the user's "Talk" page to contact them directly, but that's public.

What are the Terms and Conditions to use this site?

The WikiTribune Terms & Conditions seem to apply, but I am not a lawyer! If you have questions concerning this issue, you should contact info {@} wikitribune.com or Fiona

This doesn't answer my question!

There is a Help SubWiki, try asking there.

I have a question which should be listed here!

Please post it in the comments. We are trying to set up a process for maintenance and translation, which is still very much a work in progress :)

"What are the Terms and Conditions to use this site?

The WikiTribune Terms & Conditions seem to apply, but I am not a lawyer! If you have questions concerning this issue, you should contact info {@} wikitribune.com or Fiona."

That's not very helpful. https://www.wikitribune.com/terms-and-conditions/  gets 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable

I'm gonna be blunt. Terms and Conditions get a 503 and there's no sign of a privacy policy, and yet you're asking users to pay up with either money or friends to get off a waiting list. Who in their right mind does either of these things without knowing the actual nature of what they are signing up for?

"What are the Terms and Conditions to use this site? The WikiTribune Terms & Conditions seem to apply, but I am not a layer!"

Are you kidding? You're trying to make an international social media site and you don't have lawyers? (Or layers?) And your entire anti-harassment policy is "tell one of these three people"? Where's the policy describing what constitutes abuse, harassment, or hate speech? Are there special protections for marginalized groups? How will you protect people from mass-reporting campaigns by neo-Nazis? What do I do if Fiona is the person harassing me? What actions will your moderation team take when I report to them? How will you avoid burning them out if they're each responsible for moderating the posts of a hundred thousand users and counting? Are they prepared to see violent and disturbing images and speech, including child pornography, Nazi iconography, detailed rape threats, and gore? What support structures and mental health services do you have in place for them? Is there any particular reason why they all appear to be women?

How on Earth did you look at Facebook and Twitter and think "yeah, we can do that" without even asking these very basic questions?

I agree with Linda Blanchard, if you get rid of the individual posts, I will not be staying. I'm looking for an alternative to Facebook that lets me talk about my life with friends and family, not a news aggregation site. Where facebook succeeds is in being a place where I can see what my family and friends are up too all over the world. (Where it fails is in a lot of places, thus why I'm looking for an alternate site). If you are truly promoting WT.Social as an alternate to FB then you need to keep and build functionality that allows friends and family to connect, ways to manage relationships on the site (friend group and family group filters for posts), and privacy that allows only selected people to see posts if the user chooses to be more private.

Re: Individual and Jimmy's comment on it. If you do away with the Individual option, I will surely leave, because this will not then be a replacement for facebook for me.

Ingrid Strauch

Added: Whether or not the "individual" option is purposeful is on the trial.

How about using „@username“ in comments?
Is there a functionality behind it (e.g. leading to Profile page of username), or does it just mean, this comment is meant for username?

It seems like every post is public.  is there no private between friends conversations?  all the articles mention wt.social as a competitor to facebook,  but that's the major use case for facebook.  Am I correct to assume that type of storys about your life between friends is not something wt.social is going to target?

How do I decline the request of someone who wants to be my friend? On my page, I see a link to them and an accept button, but not decline/reject button, and on their page, I see a button to follow them and one to accept them, but not one to decline/reject them as a friend.

I found that one way is to accept them as a friend, then go to their page and unfriend them. It seems like there should be a better way?

Marcus Büttemeyer
Wednesday 20/11/2019 12:18:23

@Stewart: Not sure, but the waiting list seems a plausible reason for that behavior.
@Berndt: There is a wiki WT:Improvements here: https://wt.social//wt/wtimprovements I _think_ that's where feature requests should go.
@Linda: Thanks for the corrections :) And the T&Cs are to legalese for me to comment on

Linda Blanchard
Wednesday 20/11/2019 09:03:13

Followed the link to Terms & Conditions, thence to the Corrections Policy there. What does "Clear corrections will be made to errors of fact or where clear meaning was lost, not for minor typographical errors" mean? Don't correct typos? I don't understand the phrase "clear corrections". (You may note I just corrected two typos on this page.)

Leonardo, for some reason I do not see either an add friend or a follow option when viewing this profile (or other friends-of-friends).  Maybe these users are still in the waiting list?  I do see one friend-of-a-friend who has posted content, and I get the options for them.

Leonardo G

Just go to their profile and select add friend. Besides you have the follow buttom as well.

Stewart Evans
Wednesday 20/11/2019 03:44:11

How can I add as a friend someone who is already a member?  For instance, I can see someone I know in the friends list of one of my WT-friends, and go to their profile page, but there is no option there to connect with them.

@Andreas: In the main menu (top-right "burger" icon) you have "My account" and there, on the left side is a button "Edit Notifications" which allows you to customize the emails notifications send out.

Any way to manage email messages by „Member Of“ on new issues? It floods email account. For me it‘s enough to have the Bell Info button WT inside... I found nothing for that and no faq answer yet.

How can I block certain topics? Say I follow a person for news and info about a hobby but I have no interest in their Political posts or vice versa? I still want to follow them but not see their posts in certain subwikis.

Friday 15/11/2019 16:43:34

@Mel, there is not way to set a filter by language yet, but at least on the level of subwikis,  it is planned; please look here:

@Rainer: On the article pages, yes. Otherwise it says something like "Feed from XYZ" or "Your feed" at the top

Marcus Büttemeyer
Tuesday 12/11/2019 14:49:55

Added sections "I want to create a new subwiki..." and "How do subwiki hastags work?" from the German version.

Rainer Schumacher
Tuesday 12/11/2019 11:59:44

May be, I‘ve got that wrong. I‘ve interpreted the small top line „Posted in: xyz“ being the name of the subwiki (in this case „xyz“).

I don't completely understand, the site already does that?

Rainer Schumacher
